Because We Were Here

All we've seen
And everywhere we've been
Sweet deeds and thoughtless sins
Battles taken that we don't always win
Are worth the engagement, despite the fear
They make up who we are, so raise the bar
Because we were here

We've mostly given our best
Endurance is king, test after test
In time, become wise; love more and hate less
We've learned to clean up our own mess
Should we stumble upon an occasional regret
It shouldn't be rationalized as a lost bet
Essential self-evolving values held dear
Reap what we sow; stand by what we know
Because we were here

Can't take back all that we've done
Past days paved under the God-given sun
Mustn't deny the journey no matter how the race's been run
No beginning, nor end; no finish line, nor starter's gun
We see ourselves as we hope to be
By selective amnesia we're spared our own self-infamy
Life's ongoing promise is both benediction and blasphemy
Our own personal spin-doctor, we often fog our own mirror
At day's end it doesn't matter, for better or worse, blessing or curse
Because we were here

How well can our present be shaped by our past
If our self-defining lenses are caked by revisionist dust?
We can only rely on those close by
Who've been with us the long while
Relationships earned and weather worn
Allow us to grow and change, continuously reborn
Can't become too busy to keep them near
God's best love comes not from above
All that's them is in us, because they were here

Someday they'll see
All the things we tried to do and be
"Selfishness aside, it's a long ride"
Or "Outa my way, they won't mind"
Choices inside us, earth's generations beneath us and the heaven's above us
Will look upon our everyday doings to judge us
The sum of our collective effort is our life's veneer
Short sighted or wrongs righted
They'll say it's because we were here
