There is nothing in the dark that was not there in the light.

Leo goes on to say that Rock Mountain's communication system is still in good working condition. This pleases Jon because he will be able to find out what happened to his friends and family. Thinking about this, Jon demands that Leo get him there as quickly as possible. After listening to Jon's concern. Leo assures him that he will take him to Rock Mountain.
The two then continue their journey by walking along a sunken roadway. Their path littered with twisted metal and debris. They see first hand the power of Mother Nature.
A tremor then shakes the ground beneath them. The two men latch onto a fallen street sign that says, "Welcome To The City Of Angels". With a deep rumble, the tremmor becomes increasing violent before it fades away.
Jon and Leo both sigh in relief. Leo then realizes that he still has not seen any traces of human or animal remains. Leo says. "It looks to me that every living organism has completely vanished." "All life gone!" Then looking at Jon Leo says, "I can't believe you live through this! Jon agrees and says, "I'm lucky that I had that pod to escape into."
A few years before Jon was in any danger the government had a refuge pod delivered to his laboratory. This pod was designed to give Jon protection against the building collasping on top of him. He had escaped into this egg-shaped pod just before this natural disaster began.
Jon quickly replies, "Not all life has vanished." "What you can not see can be deadly." "There are still living microscopic organisms, insects, small animals, and maybe even some humans who might of survived." Jon replies, "Yea?" "Where?" "Not only has the world been ripped and torn, the Madmanm, the one who wants to rule this unverse, also had deadly gasses dispersed into the atmosphere."
Then Leo laughs, shakes his clenched fist at the blacken suit filled sky and shouts, "The selfish Human Race were predestine to self-destruct!" "They repay Mother Earth, who raised and nurtured them from ancient civilizations, by turning her into a cold dead lifeless rock!"
It is at this point that Jon realizes that he does not care for his new acquaintance's attitude. He has his own ideas about the future of earth. Plans that could even include moving the planet to a new solar system.
Jon then suggests that they should find a place to rest before the the sun goes down.
He also went on to ask Leo, "How far of a journey is it to Rock Mountain?" Jon has only heard of this place but did not know for sure where it was built. Leo replies, "It will take a couple days for us to get there." Hearing this, Jon then replies quickly by saying, "If the tremors fade and we surrive the storms!"
Jon doesn't agree in that this journey will be an easy one because of the unpredictable environment. Jon believes that Leo knows little about how much life has been altered. The way it will mutate it's self to adapt to this vile environment. All the various infectious micro-organisms. This adaptability all life is going through to survive. Jon realizes that Leo has yet to see the mutating beings that probualy still live off this contaminated land. This baffles Jon because Leo should have seen something on his way to rescue him. Some kind of evidence of life!
Jon also realizes that Leo was very lucky to even find him. However, Leo does not realize what he has got himself into. Nothing could have prepared him for this type of mission.
After a few hours of walking they reach the outskirts of the city where the terrain becomes very rugged. The ground torn by earthquakes and smoldering streams that run in all directions. Scattered flashes from small fires burning on the hillside illuminates the swiriling clouds black soot.
Finally, they see some evidence of life. On the ground, a lifeless yellow parakeet lies dead. Jon picks the little bird up, tosses it into a burring pool of liquid, and says, "Birds will never fly in this sky again." Witnessing this Jon grabs Leo by both his ears, and throws him to the ground shouting "Watch what you do around me!" "That bird was a pet!"
Leo then reminds Jon to do exactly what he says or he will not take him to Rock Mountain. Jon takes this as a threat so he tries to kick Jon in the head. However, before he could, Leo grabs Jon's foot and pulls him close enough to be able to clench Jon's throat with one hand. While Jon gasps for air Leo says, "Which way is north!" Seeing stars Jon points north. Knowing the way Leo does not wait for Jon to fully revive and he continues down the street by himself.
As darkness begins to fall, Leo continues to climb up a ridge. He looks back over his shoulder and then shakes his head seeing how Jon is struggling to keep up with him. He then sits down on a large rock that partially blocks a entrance to a cave. Leo then says quietly to himself, "What a sad lifeless city."
By now he is beginning to remember that at one time this, "Sad lifeless city" was his home. Back before the explosions. When the streets were never quiet because the unending traffic. Life in the fast lane was a daily routine. Then came political power struggles that took over minds of reason. These faults in the leaders of the land left Mother Earth to slowly die in agony
