Again, from within my thoughts I heard Charlie,
"Oh no! I was not even paying attention!
"Some fisherman on the pier has caught
us with his smelting net! We are being pulled
up! The smelt does not run this time of season
so why is this smelting rig being used. Oh
no! It is not a fisherman at all! Its' a
big black rat with sharp teeth and red beady
eyes!"
I did not understand completely what was
going on however it became obvious to me
that we were in trouble.
Then Charlie said,
"You might as well forget about the
rescue and save your own life! It was nice
knowing you!"
Charlie then coughed and this hurled me into
the bright sunlight. After my bug-eyes adjusted
to the sunlight, I could see that a black
rat was carrying Charlie by the tail! I did
not know what to do! I followed behind the
rat while he scampered down the pier.
It felt like that rat was purposely doing
this to ruin my short life! I also decided
that Charlie is my favorite friend and that
I would not let this rat get away!
I buzzed down the pier as fast as my little
wings could carry me. When I got close, I
landed on the rat's nose. The black rat glared
at me with his red angry eyes. As he kept
running down the pier, the rat then let out
a hardy laugh.
I could hear Charlie screaming for me to
save myself. Seeing Charlie tail-fin clenched
in this rat's hand made something hurt inside
me. My bug-eyes began to get wet with tears.
Right then, I felt something that I never
felt before. It felt like the energy of a
million flies' shot through my veins.
I have heard people say that you can always
depend on your true friends. So since Charlie
is my favorite friend I would not let this
rat get away with hurting Charlie.
I decided to follow my instinct. If any bug
knows how to irritate someone, it is this
bug.
I instinctively flew into his ear as far
as I could go and then I crawled even deeper.
I then began biting its walls and pulling
out all the hair that I could grab onto.
The rat reacted by digging into his ear but
I was too far inside for his sharp claw to
reach me. He then began shaking his head.
I kept biting and pulling out hair until
I felt the rat fall to the ground.
I then flew out of his ear and could see
Charlie flopping until she reached the side
of the pier and fell into the lake water.
Charlie's racing thoughts were too much for
me to understand. They put me into a panic
and when I looked to see where the rat was
I could hear Charlie saying,
"Hurry! Hover close to the waters surface
and close your eyes!"
The rat ran toward me but I got away by doing
a looptee loop. I then followed Charlie's
directions and with in seconds I was back
inside Charlie's mouth.
